Description

Discover the secrets to making homemade Turkish Delight, a sweet and chewy treat that can be customized with various flavors and nuts.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 1/4 cup lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1 teaspoon rosewater (or orange blossom water)
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (pistachios or walnuts)
  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

  1. In a medium saucepan, combine 1 cup of water and the granulated sugar. Stir over medium heat until the sugar dissolves completely. Bring to a boil and then reduce the heat to low, allowing it to simmer gently.
  2. In a separate bowl, mix the cornstarch, cream of tartar, and remaining 1 cup of water until smooth. Gradually add this mixture to the simmering sugar syrup, stirring continuously to avoid lumps.
  3. Continue to cook the mixture over low heat, stirring constantly for about 10-15 minutes, until it thickens and becomes translucent.
  4. Once thickened, remove from heat and stir in the lemon juice and rosewater. If using, fold in the chopped nuts.
  5. Pour the mixture into a greased 8×8-inch square pan and spread it evenly. Let it cool at room temperature for at least 4 hours or until set.
  6. Once set, dust a clean surface with powdered sugar. Turn the Turkish Delight out onto the surface and cut it into small squares. Dust the pieces with more powdered sugar to prevent sticking.
  7. Store the Turkish Delight in an airtight container, separated by layers of powdered sugar.

Notes

  • For a fruity twist, add a few drops of food coloring and a teaspoon of your favorite fruit extract, such as strawberry or lemon, to the mixture before pouring it into the pan.
  • Experiment with different nuts or dried fruits like cranberries or apricots for added texture and flavor.
