Description

Tteokbokki is a popular Korean dish made with chewy rice cakes and a spicy sauce, perfect for those who love bold flavors.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups Korean rice cakes (tteok)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 onion, sliced
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1/2 cup fish cakes, sliced (optional)
  • 2 cups water
  • 2 tablespoons gochujang (Korean red chili paste)
  • 1 tablespoon gochugaru (Korean red chili flakes)
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon minced garlic
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1 tablespoon sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Soak the rice cakes in warm water for about 30 minutes to soften them. Drain and set aside.
  2. In a large skillet or wok, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onion and sauté for about 2-3 minutes until translucent.
  3. Stir in the chopped green onions and fish cakes (if using) and cook for another 2 minutes.
  4. Add the water, gochujang, gochugaru, soy sauce, sugar, and minced garlic to the skillet. Stir well to combine and bring to a simmer.
  5. Once the sauce is simmering, add the soaked rice cakes to the skillet. Cook for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the rice cakes are heated through and the sauce thickens.
  6. Drizzle with sesame oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds before serving.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, omit the fish cakes and add more vegetables like bell peppers or carrots.
  • Adjust the spice level by adding more or less gochugaru according to your taste preference.
