Description

Tres leches cake is a moist and delicious Latin American dessert soaked in three types of milk.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 5 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 1 can (12 ounces) evaporated milk
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1 cup heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • Fresh berries or fruit for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar together until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the whole milk. Begin and end with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish and smooth the top. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. While the cake is baking, prepare the milk mixture by whisking together the sweetened condensed milk, evaporated milk, and whole milk in a bowl.
  8. Once the cake is done, remove it from the oven and let it cool for about 10 minutes. Poke holes all over the cake with a fork or skewer.
  9. Slowly pour the milk mixture over the warm cake, allowing it to soak in. Let the cake cool completely, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours (or overnight for best results).
  10. Before serving, whip the heavy cream with the powdered sugar and vanilla extract until soft peaks form. Spread the whipped cream over the top of the cake. Garnish with fresh berries or fruit if desired.

Notes

  • For added flavor, you can infuse the milk mixture with a splash of rum or coconut extract.
  • Try adding a layer of sliced strawberries or bananas between the cake and the whipped cream for a fruity twist.
