Description

Discover the secret to perfectly caramelized apples with this delicious Tarte Tatin recipe.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 medium Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and halved
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 sheet of puff pastry, thawed
  • Flour for dusting

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a 10-inch cast-iron skillet or oven-safe pan, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the sugar and stir until it dissolves and turns a golden caramel color, about 5-7 minutes.
  3. Carefully add the apple halves to the skillet, cut side down. Cook for about 10 minutes, occasionally shaking the pan, until the apples are caramelized and tender.
  4. Sprinkle the vanilla extract and cinnamon over the apples, ensuring even distribution.
  5. Roll out the puff pastry on a lightly floured surface to fit over the skillet. Place the pastry over the apples, tucking the edges down around the apples.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until the pastry is golden brown and puffed.
  7. Remove from the oven and let it cool for 5 minutes. Carefully invert the tart onto a serving plate while it’s still warm. Be cautious of the hot caramel.
  8. Serve warm, optionally with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.

Notes

  • For added flavor, consider adding a splash of apple brandy or rum to the caramel while cooking the apples.
  • You can substitute the Granny Smith apples with Honeycrisp or Braeburn apples for a sweeter taste.
