Description
Tang Yuan is a traditional Chinese dessert made from glutinous rice flour, filled with sweet sesame paste and served in a sweet syrup.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups glutinous rice flour
- 3/4 cup water
- 1/2 cup sesame paste
- 1/4 cup sugar
- 1/4 cup finely chopped peanuts (optional)
- 1/4 cup sugar (for sweetening the water)
- 6 cups water (for boiling)
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine the glutinous rice flour and water. Mix until a smooth dough forms. If the dough is too dry, add a little more water, one tablespoon at a time.
- Divide the dough into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter.
- In a separate bowl, mix the sesame paste with 1/4 cup of sugar and the chopped peanuts (if using) until well combined.
- Take one dough ball and flatten it in your palm. Place about 1 teaspoon of the sesame mixture in the center, then carefully fold the edges of the dough over the filling and roll it back into a ball. Repeat with the remaining dough and filling.
- In a large pot, bring 6 cups of water to a boil. Gently drop the filled tang yuan into the boiling water. Cook until they float to the surface, about 5-7 minutes.
- In another pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil and stir in 1/4 cup of sugar to create a sweet syrup.
- Once the tang yuan are cooked, use a slotted spoon to remove them from the boiling water and transfer them to the sweet syrup. Let them sit for a few minutes to absorb the sweetness.
- Serve the tang yuan warm in bowls, drizzled with the sweet syrup.
Notes
- For a twist, try using different fillings such as red bean paste or chocolate.
- You can also serve tang yuan in a warm ginger syrup for added flavor.
