Description
A simple and delicious recipe for making traditional Scottish Tablet, a sweet treat that everyone can enjoy.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cup sweetened condensed milk
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, combine the granulated sugar, sweetened condensed milk, and unsalted butter. Place the saucepan over medium heat and stir continuously until the butter melts and the sugar dissolves completely.
- Once the mixture is smooth, increase the heat to medium-high and bring it to a gentle boil. Stop stirring and allow it to boil for about 10-15 minutes, or until it reaches the soft ball stage (about 240°F on a candy thermometer).
- Remove the saucepan from the heat and quickly stir in the vanilla extract and salt.
- Allow the mixture to cool for a few minutes, then beat it with a wooden spoon or electric mixer for about 5-10 minutes, until it thickens and starts to lose its gloss.
- Pour the mixture into a greased 8-inch square baking dish and spread it evenly. Let it cool completely at room temperature, then cut it into squares.
Notes
- To enhance the flavor, consider adding a teaspoon of finely grated lemon or orange zest to the mixture before pouring it into the baking dish.
- For a chocolate variation, stir in 1/4 cup of cocoa powder after removing the mixture from the heat, then proceed with the recipe as directed.
