Description
A simple and delicious recipe for stuffed grape leaves (Dolma) that is perfect for any occasion.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup uncooked long-grain rice
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon dried dill
- 1/2 teaspoon dried mint
- 1/4 cup fresh parsley, chopped
- 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
- 1 jar (16 oz) grape leaves in brine, rinsed and drained
- 2 cups vegetable broth or water
- 1 lemon, sliced (for garnish)
Instructions
- In a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the rice, salt, black pepper, paprika, dill, and mint. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes, stirring frequently.
- Remove the saucepan from heat and mix in the chopped parsley and lemon juice. Allow the mixture to cool slightly.
- Lay a grape leaf on a flat surface, vein side up. Place about 1 tablespoon of the rice mixture near the stem end of the leaf. Fold the sides over the filling and roll tightly from the stem end to the tip. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
- Arrange the stuffed grape leaves seam side down in a large pot. Pour the vegetable broth or water over the leaves, adding more liquid if necessary to cover them. Place a plate on top to keep them submerged.
- Bring to a boil over medium-high heat, then reduce to low and simmer for about 45 minutes, or until the rice is tender.
- Remove from heat and let cool for 10 minutes before serving. Garnish with lemon slices.
Notes
- For a meatier version, add 1/2 pound of ground beef or lamb to the rice mixture before cooking.
- Experiment with spices by adding cumin or cinnamon for a different flavor profile.
