Description

Stuffed Cabbage Rolls are a delicious family favorite, filled with a savory mixture of ground beef, rice, and spices, all wrapped in tender cabbage leaves and baked in a flavorful tomato sauce.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 large head of green cabbage
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 cup cooked rice
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F.
  2. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and place the whole head in the boiling water for about 2-3 minutes, or until the outer leaves are pliable. Remove the cabbage and let it cool.
  3. Carefully peel off 12 leaves and set aside.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika. Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
  5. Place about 1/4 cup of the meat mixture in the center of each cabbage leaf. Fold the sides over the filling and roll from the bottom up to form a tight roll. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
  6. In a separate bowl, mix together the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and thyme. Spread a thin layer of this sauce on the bottom of a large baking dish.
  7. Arrange the stuffed cabbage rolls seam side down in the baking dish. Pour the remaining sauce over the rolls, covering them completely.
  8. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the rolls are cooked through and the sauce is bubbly.
  9. Let the cabbage rolls cool for a few minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian version, substitute the ground beef with lentils or a plant-based meat alternative.
  • Add chopped bell peppers or mushrooms to the meat mixture for extra flavor and nutrition.
