Description
Stuffed Cabbage Rolls are a delicious family favorite, filled with a savory mixture of ground beef, rice, and spices, all wrapped in tender cabbage leaves and baked in a flavorful tomato sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 large head of green cabbage
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 cup cooked rice
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce
- 1 can (14.5 ounces) diced tomatoes
- 1 tablespoon brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon dried thyme
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F.
- Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Carefully remove the core from the cabbage and place the whole head in the boiling water for about 2-3 minutes, or until the outer leaves are pliable. Remove the cabbage and let it cool.
- Carefully peel off 12 leaves and set aside.
- In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, cooked rice, chopped onion, minced garlic, salt, pepper, and paprika. Mix well until all ingredients are combined.
- Place about 1/4 cup of the meat mixture in the center of each cabbage leaf. Fold the sides over the filling and roll from the bottom up to form a tight roll. Repeat with the remaining leaves and filling.
- In a separate bowl, mix together the tomato sauce, diced tomatoes, brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, lemon juice, and thyme. Spread a thin layer of this sauce on the bottom of a large baking dish.
- Arrange the stuffed cabbage rolls seam side down in the baking dish. Pour the remaining sauce over the rolls, covering them completely.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 1 hour. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, until the rolls are cooked through and the sauce is bubbly.
- Let the cabbage rolls cool for a few minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a vegetarian version, substitute the ground beef with lentils or a plant-based meat alternative.
- Add chopped bell peppers or mushrooms to the meat mixture for extra flavor and nutrition.
