Description

A classic Italian dish featuring a rich and hearty meat sauce served over spaghetti.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 medium carrot, finely chopped
  • 1 medium celery stalk, finely chopped
  • 1 can (14.5 ounces) crushed tomatoes
  • 2 tablespoons tomato paste
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1 teaspoon dried basil
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1 pound spaghetti
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
  • Grated Parmesan cheese (for serving)

Instructions

  1. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the diced onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are softened.
  2. Add the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
  3. Increase the heat to medium-high and add the ground beef. Cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon, about 5-7 minutes. Drain excess fat if necessary.
  4. Stir in the crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, oregano, basil, salt, black pepper, red pepper flakes (if using), and beef broth. Bring to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low. Cover and let it simmer for at least 20 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  5. While the sauce simmers, cook the spaghetti according to package instructions in a large pot of salted boiling water until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  6. Once the sauce has thickened, taste and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve the sauce over the spaghetti. Garnish with chopped parsley and grated Parmesan cheese.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, let the sauce simmer for up to an hour.
  • Substitute ground beef with ground turkey or a plant-based meat alternative for a lighter option.
