Description

Simit is a traditional Turkish bread that is crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, often enjoyed as a snack or breakfast item.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/4 cup sesame seeds
  • 1 tablespoon molasses (or honey)
  • 1 tablespoon water

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, instant yeast, sugar, and salt. Mix well.
  2. Add the warm water and vegetable oil to the dry ingredients. Stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces.
  7. Roll each piece into a long rope, about 12 inches long, and then twist the rope into a circular shape, pinching the ends to seal.
  8. In a small bowl, mix the molasses and 1 tablespoon of water.
  9. Dip each twisted dough ring into the mixture and then coat with sesame seeds.
  10. Place the coated rings on the prepared baking sheet and let them rest for another 15 minutes.
  11. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
  12. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For a sweeter version, add 1 tablespoon of sugar to the dough.
  • Try adding spices like cinnamon or nutmeg to the dough for a unique flavor twist.
