Description

Sfenj with Honey Glaze is a traditional Moroccan treat that offers a delightful combination of flavors and textures, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Vegetable oil, for frying
  • 1/2 cup honey
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup water (for glaze)
  • Chopped nuts or sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until frothy.
  2. Add the flour, salt, and cinnamon to the yeast mixture. Stir until a sticky dough forms.
  3. Cover the bowl with a clean kitchen towel and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
  4. In a deep skillet or pot, heat about 2 inches of vegetable oil over medium heat.
  5. Once the oil is hot, wet your hands and take a small amount of dough (about the size of a golf ball). Shape it into a ring by pressing your thumb through the center.
  6. Carefully drop the shaped dough into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown on both sides, about 2-3 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.
  7. In a small saucepan, combine honey, lemon juice, and water. Heat over low until the honey is melted and the mixture is smooth.
  8. Dip the warm sfenj into the honey glaze, allowing any excess to drip off. Place on a serving plate and garnish with chopped nuts or sesame seeds if desired.

Notes

  • For a spiced version, add a pinch of nutmeg or cardamom to the dough.
  • Serve with a side of yogurt or fresh fruit for a delightful breakfast or snack.
