Description
Sayadiya is a flavorful dish made with fish and basmati rice, seasoned with aromatic spices and garnished with fresh parsley.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups basmati rice
- 1 ½ pounds white fish fillets (such as cod or tilapia)
- 1 large onion, finely chopped
- 4 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- ½ teaspoon turmeric
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon salt (or to taste)
- 4 cups fish stock or water
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 lemon, juiced
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Rinse the basmati rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Soak the rice in water for 30 minutes, then drain and set aside.
- In a large skillet or pot, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until golden brown, about 5-7 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic, cumin, coriander, paprika, turmeric, black pepper, and salt. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes until fragrant.
- Add the fish fillets to the skillet, cooking for about 3-4 minutes on each side until they are lightly browned. Remove the fish and set aside.
- Pour the fish stock (or water) into the skillet, bringing it to a boil. Add the soaked and drained rice, stirring gently to combine.
- Reduce the heat to low, cover the pot, and let the rice cook for about 15-20 minutes, or until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed.
- While the rice is cooking, flake the cooked fish into bite-sized pieces.
- Once the rice is done, gently fold in the flaked fish and lemon juice. Cover and let it sit for an additional 5 minutes to meld the flavors.
- Fluff the rice with a fork and garnish with chopped parsley before serving.
Notes
- For added flavor, you can marinate the fish in lemon juice and spices for 30 minutes before cooking.
- Substitute the white fish with shrimp or a mix of seafood for a different twist on this dish.
