Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 3/4 cup warm water
- 1/4 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil or melted butter
- Extra flour for dusting
Instructions
- In a large bowl, combine the flour, sugar, salt, baking powder, and baking soda. Mix well.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the warm water, yogurt, and olive oil (or melted butter).
- Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until a soft dough forms.
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rest for at least 1 hour at room temperature.
- After resting, divide the dough into 6 equal portions and shape each into a ball.
- Roll each ball into an oval or circle about 1/4 inch thick, dusting with extra flour as needed.
- Preheat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat.
- Cook each naan for 1-2 minutes on one side until bubbles form, then flip and cook for another 1-2 minutes until golden brown.
- Remove from the skillet and brush with additional melted butter or olive oil if desired.
Notes
- For a garlic naan, add 2-3 minced garlic cloves to the dough before kneading.
- To make a stuffed naan, fill the rolled-out dough with cheese, herbs, or cooked vegetables before sealing and rolling it out again.
