Description
Creamy Mashed Potatoes with Savory Gravy
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 pounds russet potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
- For the gravy:
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 cups chicken or vegetable broth
- 1 teaspoon soy sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
- Place the peeled and chopped potatoes in a large pot and cover them with cold water. Add a pinch of salt and bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Cook until the potatoes are tender, about 15-20 minutes. Drain the potatoes and return them to the pot.
- Add the butter and milk to the potatoes. Mash until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Keep warm while you prepare the gravy.
- In a separate saucepan, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute, stirring constantly to create a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the broth, stirring continuously until the mixture thickens, about 3-5 minutes. Add the soy sauce and season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Serve the mashed potatoes hot, topped with the gravy.
Notes
- For extra flavor, add roasted garlic to the mashed potatoes before mashing.
- Try using half-and-half instead of milk for an even creamier texture.
