Description

Maple Pecan Squares are a delightful Canadian treat that combines the rich flavors of maple syrup and pecans in a sweet, chewy dessert.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup pecans, chopped
  • 1 cup pure maple syrup
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper for easy removal.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder. Set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until well combined.
  4. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, mixing until just combined. Fold in the chopped pecans.
  5. Press the dough evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan. Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until lightly golden.
  6. While the crust is baking, prepare the filling. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the maple syrup, brown sugar, and heavy cream. Stir until the mixture is smooth and begins to bubble. Remove from heat and let cool slightly before adding the chopped pecans.
  7. Once the crust is done baking, pour the maple pecan filling over the hot crust, spreading it evenly. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 20-25 minutes, or until the filling is set and bubbly.
  8. Remove from the oven and let cool completely in the pan on a wire rack. Once cooled, cut into squares and serve.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, try using dark maple syrup instead of regular maple syrup.
  • You can also add a pinch of cinnamon or nutmeg to the filling for a warm spice note.
  • If you prefer a chocolate twist, sprinkle some chocolate chips over the crust before adding the filling.
