Description

Manty dumplings are a traditional dish from Central Asia, known for their delicious filling and unique preparation method.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup water (plus more if needed)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 pound ground beef or lamb
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup pumpkin or potato, grated (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley, chopped (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Gradually add the water and vegetable oil, mixing until a dough forms. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth. Cover with a damp cloth and let it rest for 30 minutes.
  2. In another bowl, mix together the ground meat, chopped onion, grated pumpkin or potato (if using), cumin, black pepper, salt, and parsley until well combined.
  3. Roll out the rested dough on a floured surface to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into 3-inch squares.
  4. Place a tablespoon of filling in the center of each square. Fold the corners of the dough over the filling to form a pouch, pinching the edges to seal tightly.
  5. Prepare a steamer by bringing water to a boil. Arrange the dumplings in the steamer basket, making sure they do not touch. Steam for 25-30 minutes until the dumplings are cooked through.
  6. Serve hot with a side of yogurt or a dipping sauce of your choice.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, substitute the meat with finely chopped mushrooms and additional vegetables like carrots and bell peppers.
  • Experiment with different spices in the filling, such as paprika or coriander, to customize the flavor to your liking.
