Description

Malva Pudding is a traditional South African dessert that is easy to make and incredibly delicious.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 large egg
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 cup heavy cream (for the sauce)
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for the sauce)
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter (for the sauce)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for the sauce)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8-inch square baking dish.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, combine the milk, applesauce, melted butter, egg, vanilla extract, and vinegar. Mix well.
  4. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish.
  6. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  7. While the pudding is baking, prepare the sauce by combining the heavy cream, sugar, butter, and vanilla extract in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until smooth and the sugar is dissolved.
  8. Once the pudding is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the warm sauce over the hot pudding, allowing it to soak in.
  9. Let it sit for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, try adding a tablespoon of orange zest to the batter.
  • Serve the pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for added indulgence.
