Description
Malva Pudding is a traditional South African dessert that is easy to make and incredibly delicious.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 cup whole milk
- 1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
- 1 large egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1 tablespoon white vinegar
- 1 cup heavy cream (for the sauce)
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar (for the sauce)
- 1/4 cup unsalted butter (for the sauce)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract (for the sauce)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease an 8-inch square baking dish.
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking soda, and salt.
- In another bowl, combine the milk, applesauce, melted butter, egg, vanilla extract, and vinegar. Mix well.
- Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Do not overmix.
- Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish.
- Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- While the pudding is baking, prepare the sauce by combining the heavy cream, sugar, butter, and vanilla extract in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir until smooth and the sugar is dissolved.
- Once the pudding is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the warm sauce over the hot pudding, allowing it to soak in.
- Let it sit for about 10 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, try adding a tablespoon of orange zest to the batter.
- Serve the pudding with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for added indulgence.
