Description
Malai Kofta is a rich and creamy Indian dish made with paneer and potatoes, served in a flavorful tomato-based sauce.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup paneer, grated
- 1 medium potato, boiled and mashed
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon garam masala
- 1/4 teaspoon red chili powder
- Salt, to taste
- Oil, for frying
- 1 tablespoon ghee (clarified butter)
- 1 medium onion, finely chopped
- 1 tablespoon ginger-garlic paste
- 1 cup tomato puree
- 1/2 cup heavy cream
- 1/2 teaspoon cumin seeds
- 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
- 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder
- Fresh cilantro, for garnish
Instructions
- In a mixing bowl, combine grated paneer, mashed potato, all-purpose flour, garam masala, red chili powder, and salt. Mix well until a dough forms.
- Divide the mixture into small balls (about 1 inch in diameter) and set aside.
- Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, carefully add the kofta balls and fry until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.
- In a separate pan, heat ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
- Add chopped onions and sauté until they turn golden brown. Stir in ginger-garlic paste and cook for another minute.
- Pour in the tomato puree and cook for about 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Add coriander powder, turmeric powder, and salt. Mix well and cook for another 2-3 minutes.
- Lower the heat and stir in the heavy cream. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, allowing the sauce to thicken slightly.
- Gently add the fried kofta balls to the sauce and simmer for 5 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld.
- Garnish with fresh cilantro before serving.
Notes
- For a healthier version, bake the kofta balls instead of frying them. Preheat the oven to 400°F and bake for 20-25 minutes, turning halfway through.
- You can add chopped spinach or grated carrots to the kofta mixture for added nutrition and flavor.
