Description

Hotteok is a delicious sweet Korean pancake filled with a mixture of brown sugar, nuts, and cinnamon, perfect for a delightful treat.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1/4 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon active dry yeast
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, combine warm water, milk, and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, salt, and baking powder. Make a well in the center and pour in the yeast mixture and vegetable oil. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a lightly floured surface for about 5 minutes until smooth. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  4. In a separate bowl, mix the brown sugar, chopped nuts, and cinnamon to create the filling.
  5. Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 8 equal pieces. Flatten each piece into a circle about 4 inches in diameter.
  6. Place a tablespoon of the filling in the center of each circle, then fold the edges over to seal the filling inside. Gently flatten the filled dough balls to form thick pancakes.
  7. Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a little vegetable oil. Fry each pancake for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and cooked through.
  8. Serve hot, optionally drizzling with honey or syrup.

Notes

  • For a twist, try adding chocolate chips or dried fruit to the filling.
  • You can also make a savory version by using cheese and green onions as the filling.
