- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes (no added sugar)
- 1 tablespoon tomato paste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 1 teaspoon dried basil
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar
- Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)
Instructions
- In a large saucepan, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
- Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 1 minute until fragrant.
- Add the crushed tomatoes and tomato paste to the saucepan, stirring to combine.
- Season with oregano, basil, red pepper flakes (if using), salt, and pepper.
- Bring the sauce to a simmer, then reduce the heat to low and let it cook for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
- Stir in the apple cider vinegar and adjust seasoning if necessary.
- Remove from heat and let cool slightly before serving. Garnish with fresh basil leaves if desired.
Notes
- For a meatier sauce, add 1 pound of ground beef or turkey while sautéing the onions.
- For extra flavor, consider adding a splash of red wine or a tablespoon of balsamic vinegar.
