Description
Gulab Jamun is a popular Indian sweet made from milk powder, fried until golden brown, and soaked in a fragrant sugar syrup.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups milk powder
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/4 cup ghee (clarified butter)
- 1/2 cup milk (or as needed)
- Oil for frying
- 2 cups sugar (for syrup)
- 1 cup water (for syrup)
- 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder (for syrup)
- 1 teaspoon rose water (for syrup)
Instructions
- In a saucepan, combine sugar and water. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring until sugar dissolves.
- Add cardamom powder and rose water to the syrup. Reduce heat and let simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.
- In a mixing bowl, combine milk powder, all-purpose flour, and baking soda.
- Add ghee and mix until crumbly.
- Gradually add milk, a little at a time, mixing until a soft dough forms. Let the dough rest for 10-15 minutes.
- Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
- Divide the dough into small balls (about 1 inch in diameter), ensuring there are no cracks.
- Once the oil is hot, carefully drop the balls in, a few at a time. Fry until golden brown, turning occasionally for even cooking.
- Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
- Once the balls are fried, immerse them in the warm sugar syrup. Let them soak for at least 30 minutes before serving.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, consider adding a tablespoon of khoya (dried milk) to the dough.
- You can also garnish with chopped pistachios or almonds for added texture and taste.
- If you prefer a less sweet version, reduce the sugar in the syrup by half.
