Description

Gulab jamun (India) is the ultimate sweet treat recipe!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups milk powder
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 cup ghee (clarified butter)
  • 1/2 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 teaspoon cardamom powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup water
  • 1 tablespoon rose water
  • Oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the milk powder, all-purpose flour, and baking soda. Mix well.
  2. Add the ghee and rub it into the dry ingredients until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. Gradually add the whole milk, mixing until a soft dough forms. If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour.
  4. Cover the dough with a damp cloth and let it rest for 15 minutes.
  5. Meanwhile, in a saucepan, combine the sugar and water. Bring to a boil, stirring until the sugar dissolves.
  6. Add the rose water and cardamom powder, then remove from heat and set aside.
  7. Heat oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat.
  8. Divide the dough into small balls, about the size of a marble, ensuring there are no cracks on the surface.
  9. Once the oil is hot, carefully drop the balls in, a few at a time, and fry until they turn golden brown, turning occasionally for even cooking (about 5-7 minutes).
  10. Remove the fried balls and drain on paper towels.
  11. Place the fried balls in the warm sugar syrup and let them soak for at least 30 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, try adding a pinch of saffron to the sugar syrup.
  • You can substitute the rose water with orange blossom water for a different aromatic twist.
