Description
Croque Madame is a delicious French comfort food made with ham, cheese, and topped with a fried egg.
Ingredients
Scale
- 8 slices of white bread
- 4 ounces of sliced ham
- 4 ounces of Gruyère cheese, grated
- 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
- 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
- 1 cup of whole milk
- 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 4 large eggs
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
- In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes until it forms a roux.
- Gradually whisk in the milk, continuing to stir until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes. Stir in the Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and mix in half of the grated Gruyère cheese until melted and smooth.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Place 4 slices of bread on a baking sheet. Layer each with a slice of ham and a generous spoonful of the cheese sauce. Top with the remaining 4 slices of bread.
- Spread the remaining cheese sauce over the top of each sandwich and sprinkle with the rest of the Gruyère cheese.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
- While the sandwiches are baking, cook the eggs in a skillet over medium heat, sunny-side up or to your preference.
- Once the sandwiches are done, remove them from the oven and top each with a fried egg. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.
Notes
- For a lighter version, use whole grain bread and low-fat cheese.
- Add sautéed spinach or mushrooms inside the sandwich for extra flavor and nutrition.
