Description

Croque Madame is a delicious French comfort food made with ham, cheese, and topped with a fried egg.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 8 slices of white bread
  • 4 ounces of sliced ham
  • 4 ounces of Gruyère cheese, grated
  • 2 tablespoons of unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons of all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup of whole milk
  • 1 teaspoon of Dijon mustard
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 4 large eggs
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the flour and whisk continuously for about 2 minutes until it forms a roux.
  3. Gradually whisk in the milk, continuing to stir until the sauce thickens, about 5 minutes. Stir in the Dijon mustard, salt, and pepper. Remove from heat and mix in half of the grated Gruyère cheese until melted and smooth.
  4. Assemble the sandwiches: Place 4 slices of bread on a baking sheet. Layer each with a slice of ham and a generous spoonful of the cheese sauce. Top with the remaining 4 slices of bread.
  5. Spread the remaining cheese sauce over the top of each sandwich and sprinkle with the rest of the Gruyère cheese.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for about 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is bubbly and golden brown.
  7. While the sandwiches are baking, cook the eggs in a skillet over medium heat, sunny-side up or to your preference.
  8. Once the sandwiches are done, remove them from the oven and top each with a fried egg. Garnish with chopped parsley before serving.

Notes

  • For a lighter version, use whole grain bread and low-fat cheese.
  • Add sautéed spinach or mushrooms inside the sandwich for extra flavor and nutrition.
