Description

Bridies are delicious meat pastries filled with a savory mixture of ground beef, onions, and mushrooms, encased in a flaky pastry crust.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, chilled and cubed
  • 6 to 8 tablespoons cold water
  • 1 pound ground beef
  • 1 small onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup mushrooms, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine the flour and salt. Add the chilled butter and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Gradually add cold water, one tablespoon at a time, mixing until the dough comes together. Form into a ball, wrap in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes.
  2. In a skillet over medium heat, cook the chopped onion until translucent, about 5 minutes. Add the ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon. Drain excess fat.
  3. Stir in the chopped mushrooms, Worcestershire sauce, thyme, salt, and pepper. Cook for an additional 5 minutes, then remove from heat and let cool.
  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F.
  5. On a floured surface, roll out the dough to about 1/8 inch thick. Cut into circles about 6 inches in diameter.
  6. Place a spoonful of the meat mixture in the center of each circle. Fold the dough over to create a half-moon shape and seal the edges by crimping with a fork.
  7. Place the bridies on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Brush the tops with the beaten egg.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes, or until golden brown. Let cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • For a spicier kick, add a pinch of cayenne pepper to the meat mixture.
  • You can also substitute ground beef with ground turkey or chicken for a lighter option.
