Description

Bobotie is a traditional South African dish made with spiced ground meat and topped with a creamy egg mixture, often served with yellow rice and chutney.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ½ pounds ground beef or lamb
  • 1 medium onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon curry powder
  • 1 teaspoon turmeric
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 slices white bread, crusts removed
  • 2 large eggs
  • ½ cup raisins or sultanas
  • ¼ cup slivered almonds (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 2 bay leaves

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat.
  3. Add the chopped onion and garlic, cooking until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the curry powder, turmeric, salt, black pepper, and brown sugar, cooking for another 2 minutes until fragrant.
  5. Add the ground beef or lamb to the skillet, breaking it apart with a spoon. Cook until browned, about 8-10 minutes.
  6. Stir in the lemon juice, raisins, and slivered almonds if using. Remove from heat.
  7. In a bowl, soak the bread in ½ cup of milk for about 5 minutes, then mash it into a paste.
  8. In another bowl, whisk together the eggs and the remaining ½ cup of milk.
  9. Combine the bread mixture with the meat mixture, then add the egg mixture, stirring until well combined.
  10. Transfer the mixture to a greased baking dish, smoothing the top.
  11. Pour the egg and milk mixture over the top and place the bay leaves on the surface.
  12. Bake for 30-40 minutes, or until the top is set and golden brown.
  13. Let cool for 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • For a spicier version, add chopped chili peppers to the meat mixture.
  • You can also substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • Serve with yellow rice and chutney for a traditional pairing.
