Description

A rich and indulgent Black Forest Cake layered with cherries and whipped cream, perfect for any celebration.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 jar (24 oz) Morello cherries, drained and juice reserved
  • 2 cups heavy whipping cream
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup chocolate shavings (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour two 9-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until well blended.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract to the dry ingredients. Beat on medium speed for about 2 minutes until smooth.
  4. Stir in the boiling water until fully combined (the batter will be thin).
  5. Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then remove from pans and transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
  7. Once cooled, slice each cake in half horizontally to create four layers.
  8. Place one layer on a serving plate. Moisten with a few tablespoons of reserved cherry juice. Spread a layer of whipped cream and top with a portion of the cherries.
  9. Repeat with the next two layers, then place the final layer on top. Frost the top and sides of the cake with the remaining whipped cream.
  10. Garnish with chocolate shavings and any remaining cherries.
  11. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour before serving to allow the flavors to meld.

Notes

  • For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of cherry liqueur to the cherry juice for soaking the cake layers.
  • You can also substitute the chocolate shavings with crushed nuts for added texture.
