Description

Bao buns (steamed buns) are a must-try delight!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon instant yeast
  • ½ teaspoon baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • ¾ cup warm water (about 110°F)
  • 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
  • 1 cup cooked and shredded chicken or pork (optional)
  • ¼ cup hoisin sauce (optional)
  • 1 tablespoon chopped green onions (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, instant yeast, baking powder, and salt. Mix well.
  2. Gradually add the warm water and vegetable oil to the dry ingredients. Stir until a dough forms.
  3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 10 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball.
  6. Roll each ball into a flat circle about 4 inches in diameter.
  7. If using a filling, place about 1 tablespoon of the filling in the center of each circle.
  8. Fold the edges of the dough over the filling and pinch to seal.
  9. Place each bun seam-side down on a piece of parchment paper.
  10. Set up a steamer over boiling water and steam the buns in batches for about 10-12 minutes, or until fluffy and cooked through.
  11. Serve warm, either plain or with additional dipping sauce if desired.

Notes

  • For a sweeter version, add 1 tablespoon of cocoa powder to the dough for chocolate bao buns.
  • Try using different fillings like sautéed vegetables or tofu for a vegetarian option.
