Description

A classic and delicious apple pie recipe that brings out the perfect flavor of Granny Smith apples.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 ½ pounds Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced (about 68 apples)
  • ¾ cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 package (14.1 ounces) refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
  • 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
  • 1 tablespoon milk (for egg wash)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss until the apples are evenly coated. Let the mixture sit for about 10 minutes to allow the juices to develop.
  3. Roll out one pie crust and fit it into a 9-inch pie pan. Pour the apple mixture into the crust, spreading it evenly. Dot the filling with small pieces of butter.
  4. Roll out the second pie crust and place it over the apple filling. Trim any excess crust hanging over the edges and crimp the edges to seal. Cut several slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the beaten egg and milk. Brush the egg wash over the top crust for a golden finish.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes. Reduce the temperature to 350°F and continue baking for an additional 35-45 minutes, or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden brown. If the edges brown too quickly, cover them with strips of aluminum foil.
  7. Allow the pie to cool for at least 2 hours before slicing to let the filling set.

Notes

  • For a twist, try adding a tablespoon of caramel sauce to the apple mixture for extra sweetness.
  • You can also substitute half of the Granny Smith apples with Honeycrisp apples for a different flavor profile.
