Description

Tunisian Brik with Harissa is a crispy delight filled with seasoned ground meat and a runny egg, perfect for a savory snack or appetizer.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 large eggs
  • 4 sheets of brik pastry (or phyllo dough)
  • 1 cup cooked and seasoned ground meat (beef or lamb)
  • 1/2 cup fresh parsley, chopped
  • 1/4 cup onion, finely chopped
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 cup harissa paste (adjust to taste)
  • Vegetable oil for frying

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, combine the cooked ground meat, parsley, onion, cumin, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until all ingredients are evenly incorporated.
  2. Lay one sheet of brik pastry on a clean surface. Place a generous tablespoon of the meat mixture in the center of the pastry.
  3. Make a small well in the center of the filling and crack an egg into it.
  4. Fold the pastry over the filling to create a triangle shape, sealing the edges by pressing them together.
  5. Repeat with the remaining sheets of pastry and filling.
  6. Heat about 1 inch of vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
  7. Once the oil is hot, carefully place the briks in the skillet, a few at a time, and fry until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes per side.
  8. Remove the briks from the oil and drain on paper towels.
  9. Serve hot with harissa on the side for dipping.

Notes

  • For a vegetarian option, substitute the ground meat with sautéed mushrooms and spinach.
  • Experiment with different fillings such as feta cheese and olives for a Mediterranean twist.
