Description

A delicious recipe for crispy Lebanese Za’atar Halloumi Fries, perfect as an appetizer or snack.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups halloumi cheese, sliced into sticks (about 1/2 inch thick)
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 large egg, whisked
  • 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons za’atar seasoning
  • 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
  • 1/4 cup olive oil (for frying)
  • Chopped fresh mint (for garnish)
  • Lemon wedges (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Slice the halloumi cheese into thick sticks, approximately 1/2 inch wide.
  2. Prepare three separate bowls: one with flour, another with the whisked egg, and the last one with a mixture of panko breadcrumbs, za’atar seasoning, onion powder, and black pepper.
  3. Coat each halloumi stick in flour, shaking off any excess.
  4. Immerse the floured stick in the egg wash, allowing any surplus to drip back into the bowl.
  5. Roll the stick in the panko mixture, pressing lightly to ensure an even coating.
  6. In a large frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat until shimmering.
  7. Add the coated halloumi sticks in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
  8. Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
  9. Transfer the cooked halloumi sticks to a plate lined with paper towels to soak up excess oil.
  10. Serve hot, garnished with fresh mint and accompanied by lemon wedges.

Notes

  • Ensure the oil is hot enough before adding the halloumi to achieve a crispy texture.
  • Feel free to adjust the seasoning according to your taste.
