Description
A delicious recipe for crispy Lebanese Za’atar Halloumi Fries, perfect as an appetizer or snack.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups halloumi cheese, sliced into sticks (about 1/2 inch thick)
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 large egg, whisked
- 1 cup panko breadcrumbs
- 2 tablespoons za’atar seasoning
- 1/4 teaspoon onion powder
- 1/4 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 1/4 cup olive oil (for frying)
- Chopped fresh mint (for garnish)
- Lemon wedges (for serving)
Instructions
- Slice the halloumi cheese into thick sticks, approximately 1/2 inch wide.
- Prepare three separate bowls: one with flour, another with the whisked egg, and the last one with a mixture of panko breadcrumbs, za’atar seasoning, onion powder, and black pepper.
- Coat each halloumi stick in flour, shaking off any excess.
- Immerse the floured stick in the egg wash, allowing any surplus to drip back into the bowl.
- Roll the stick in the panko mixture, pressing lightly to ensure an even coating.
- In a large frying pan, heat the olive oil over medium heat until shimmering.
- Add the coated halloumi sticks in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pan.
- Fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side until golden brown and crispy.
- Transfer the cooked halloumi sticks to a plate lined with paper towels to soak up excess oil.
- Serve hot, garnished with fresh mint and accompanied by lemon wedges.
Notes
- Ensure the oil is hot enough before adding the halloumi to achieve a crispy texture.
- Feel free to adjust the seasoning according to your taste.
